The Adidas Samba was first released in 1949: 

The Samba was originally designed for football players to train on icy, hard ground. The shoe’s gumsole has a suction design to help with this. The Samba’s original design featured the classic three stripes and a gold trefoil on the foldable tongue. 

The Samba’s name comes from the Brazilian dance and music genre, and was chosen to highlight the country as the host of the 1950 FIFA World Cup. However, Adidas has said that the shoe was actually nicknamed “Samba” at German football matches. 

The Samba has undergone many updates over the years, including:
  • 1972: The Adidas Originals Samba was launched, with a lower ankle cut, heel padding, and a zoned outsole 
  • 1982 Samba Spezial: This model included a shock-absorbent polyurethane wedge and a multi-stud outsole 
  • Samba Millennium: This version was made without the extended tongue 
  • Samba ’85: Another version of the shoe 
  • Classic M: A vintage version of the shoe that is still in production 
The Samba has become a symbol of fashion and sportswear culture worldwide. It has been worn by cultural icons and has been featured in pop culture through collaborations and celebrity endorsements.
